PMINAC - 2023 Project of the Year

This year we celebrate excellence in project management with the prestigious 2023 Project of the Year Award by the Project Management Institute Northern Alberta Chapter (PMINAC). This accolade applauds project teams for their outstanding achievements, showcasing excellence in project management, remarkable organizational results, and positive societal impacts.

Open to projects from organizations within PMINAC's geographic area, this competition invites you to put your project in the spotlight. Our rigorous application and evaluation process through experienced committee members ensures that the best projects emerge victorious. With awards in 7 diverse categories, each category winner can be considered for the coveted title of Overall Project of the Year.

The submitted project for evaluation must have been completed between January 1st, 2022, and December 31st, 2023, (The project may have been started before this date range. However, the completion date must fall within the given range) and could be amongst any of the categories listed below:

  • Government (Federal, Provincial, Municipal).
  • Academic Institutions.
  • Construction.
  • Energy.
  • Banking/Financial Services.
  • Information Technology.
  • Not-for-profit organizations.

Submission Process and Guidelines: Written essay and formal submission (All candidates - Projects)

All candidates applying for PMINAC’s Project of the Year must submit an essay in about 2,000 words describing the ‘Story of Success’ of your project, and send submission via email to DirectorPOY@pminac.com. Submissions must be received between March 1st and April 19, 2024. PMINAC’s Evaluation Committee members, a group of PMI volunteers, and subject matter experts will select the winning projects in each of the categories as well as one overall winning Project of the Year from amongst the category winners. Winners will be notified by May 08, 2024, and the awards will be presented at the PMINAC’s Annual Conference scheduled for May 15, 2024.

PMINAC reserves the right not to select any winners for a particular category if the evaluations performed indicate that nominations do not meet the stated criteria.

Important: The submitting organization must provide the name, title, and email identification of a Lead Nominator, who will act as the primary point of contact for any communication between PMINAC and the submitting organization. In addition, please provide one secondary (backup) contact as well, so PMINAC can contact them in case the Lead Nominator is unavailable.

  • The Lead Nominator does not require PMI affiliation.

Essay: Story of Project Success

Write an essay in about 2,000 words describing the ‘Story of Success’ (discuss for better understanding) of your project. 

Include the following: 

  • Submission Category
  • Highlight the project’s customer, the challenge, and the solution.
  • Describe your method of delivery. What is your structure, and what is the outcome?
  • What was the planned and actual duration of the project?

The following evaluation criteria are required to craft your essay, the response to these questions within your essay will be used for scoring the submissions: 

  • Category 1: What was the specific challenge that your project addressed, why was it significant and how was the challenge mitigated? 
  • Category 2: What were the key outcomes and benefits of your project, and how did they meet or exceed the initial objectives?
  • Category 3: How did your project align with your organization’s strategic goals or mission?
  • Category 4: How did you manage the delivery of your project and were there any key lessons learned? 
  • Category 5: How did your project demonstrate the PMI values (Make It Easy, Aim Higher, Be Welcoming, Embrace Curiosity, and Together We Can)? 

Supporting documents (optional)

You may submit up to five (5) images to support your project story in ‘.jpg’ format. Any captions or explanations should be included as part of the image.

Number of Awards

  • One winning project will be selected within each of the seven (7) submission categories listed above, as the ‘Project of the Year’ winner in that category.
  • One project will be selected from amongst the category winners, as the overall winner for PMINAC’s Project of the Year award.  
  • The overall winning project will be submitted by PMINAC as an entry to the PMI Global Project of the Year competition.

Eligible: 

  • Projects from PMINAC’s geographical area are eligible to be submitted.
  • The project must have been completed between January 01, 2022, and December 31, 2023.

Not Eligible:

  • A project that has either won or has been previously nominated for the PMINAC Project of the Year Award.
  • Projects completed before or after the eligibility time window are not eligible.
  • Current PMI staff, PMI contractors, and/or PMI consultants are not eligible to apply for this award.
  • Current PMINAC Board members are not eligible for this award.

In the event of a Successful Nomination

  • The Lead Nominator will be notified of the successful nomination after the evaluation process.
  • The nominations, evaluation process, and scores are proprietary to PMINAC and will not be disclosed to nominators or nominees.
  • Winners will be notified by May 08, 2024, and the awards will be presented at PMINAC’s Annual Conference scheduled for May 15, 2024.
