Call for Mentors - U OF A Mentorship Program:

The University of Alberta Career Centre (UACC) is looking for mentors with PMP designations to participate in their Career Mentoring Program for Fall 2023. The Career Mentoring Program matches students and postdoctoral scholars with mentors who are community-based professionals with relevant experience and interests. Through mentoring relationships, students and postdoctoral scholars develop and enhance the skills, knowledge, attitudes, and connections they need to transition into the world of work. This program can be completed remotely.

The UACC is looking for mentors who match or partially meet the following descriptions:

The following requirements are from the U OF A Mentorship Program.

  • This professional understands how to blend the technical and management sides of engineering. The mentor works in an interdisciplinary role at the intersection of the two. The mentor works in the area of reliability engineering, potentially related to robotics or processes. Ideally, they have a PMP or Sigma Six designation. The mentor is an EIT who is ideally based in Edmonton. It will be a bonus if the student has experience as an international student in Canada. This professional was hired in the last few years so they can talk about their experience in the hiring process. It would be great if the mentor had previous experience as a mentor.

  • This mentor has a managerial position in the technology, manufacturing, oil, and gas or aerospace industries with a minimum of 3-4 years of experience at a large, established company such as Telus, Rogers, Imperial Oil, Bombardier, Boeing, etc. They currently work as a project manager, process control manager, quality control manager, operations manager, or similar mid-to-senior level managerial positions. This mentor resides in Alberta, BC, or Quebec but preferably lives in or often travels to Edmonton. Preferably, this mentor has a master’s degree or higher in engineering, business, or technology. It would be a bonus if they also had a PEng or PMP designation. The mentee likes to ask a lot of questions, so it would be ideal if he/she has the patience and time to answer and follow up regularly. Ideally, this professional is in his/her thirties and has experience as an international student or has immigrated to Canada for work. It would be a plus if the mentor also had some experience with start-ups—no preference about cultural background or gender.

  • This mentor is a professional engineer (PEng) with 10 to 15 years of experience. They work in the oil and gas sector as a chemical engineer in the greater Edmonton area. The mentor preferentially works for a multinational company such as Suncor, Syncrude, Enbridge, Imperial, Shell, or Gibson. Ideally, the mentor has an MBA or has a strong understanding of the business side. A PMP designation would be a bonus. This professional has been involved in hiring so can advise the mentee on what is expected during interviews.

If you are interested in participating and matching or partially matching one of the descriptions (or know someone who does), please contact careereducation@ualberta.ca by Friday, July 7th with your contact information and which participant you think you would be suitable for. Thank you from the UACC!
